Melitta Porcelain Manual Coffee Maker Review

Melitta Porcelain Manual Coffee MakerI had been using the manual plastic cone filter holder for many users and recently switched to the porcelain. There is a huge improvement in the taste, probably because the porcelain conducts heat better. It's also convenient to be able to put the cap on the carafe when the brewing is finished. The coffee stays warm for about 60 minutes or so.

Two complaints: the #4 filters are a bit too small; in some ways, the #6 filters work better. Also, there is only one hole, so brewing can be a bit slow sometimes, and there is occasional clogging which requires my adjusting the filter a bit.

But it does produce the best coffee I've ever had at home, a coffeehouse, or a restaurant. With coffee, lo-tech and old-school is the best way to go.

Farberware Percolators Review

Farberware PercolatorsI've happilly enjoyed Farberware's larger 20-cup electric percolator that is still brewing some wonderful coffee after 10 years. All I had to replace was the electric cord, which petered out after 3 years.
I've had this model for a few months and think that it will also last a long, long time (don't know about the cord, though). This machine looks terrifically retro, is easy to clean and keeps the coffee consistenly hot for hours. After tasting coffee here, you won't go back to your old drip machine.
My advice to you is:
1. Don't overfill the basket with grinds, because it's very easy to make a STRONG cup of coffee with this.We like strong coffee, so this is a good thing.
2. Clean it w/soap & water as soon as you are finished with it to protect the pot.I also clean it out with Dip-It every 6 weeks or so to remove the coffee stains from the inside and make it shiny and new-looking.
3.At most supermarkts you can buy little paper disc filters that sit in the bottom of the jar and keep the smaller grinds from falling into the water. It also filters out alleged carcinogens that are not removed by traditional percolators or coffee presses.
I would actually give this 4.5 stars, because sadly, these newer models are now made in China rather than the Farberware factory in the Bronx.

Nespresso CitiZ Automatic Espresso Maker Review

Nespresso CitiZ Automatic Espresso MakerI have experienced a holiday 2009 embarrassment of riches.I purchased a DeLonghi EC155 espresso machine as a gift for my wife after much research and we have used it for for 2 days with much pleasure. As a total surprise, we received a Nespresso D110 as a family gift during a party, and we could not refuse it.It will be interesting to compare the $83 DeLonghi (with another $20 rebate in the mail) to, if I have the price right on Amazon, a $279.00 Nespresso D110.

First of all, the Nespresso D110 is really beautiful--as much a work of art as a functional machine. The "winter white" is more of a cream color and the machine itself reminds me of an art deco juke box from the 1950s, if that makes any sense. It is very slim and looks beautiful on the counter top.The DeLonghi is much more utilitarian, with obviously less expensive materials (again, the price difference makes sense). If I use a PC analogy, the D110 is a Mac (elegant, incredibly simple to use, and expensive).Just as there are vocal supporters of MacWorld--I think the Nespresso D110 will have equally vocal supporters if you can justify the price...or better yet, receive as a gift :)!

Initial impressions:it took about an hour and several tries on the DeLonghi EC155 to get the proportions right for a nice espresso with the ESE pods. With the Nespresso D110, it literally took about 5 minutes--and 3 minutes of that was reading the directions.1-button operation. The crema on the espressos we produced from the Nespresso capsules were better the first time than we have been able to produce from the DeLonghi after several iterations.

My biggest complaint:the Nespresso machine does not have a milk frother whereas the DeLonghi EC155 does.Though I am not a designer, because the design is pump driven--it seems like having a frother would have been relatively easy and could have been incorporated with the elegant D110 design without altering its sleek appearance. Finally, a quick Amazon search tells me that the capsules that are to be used with the Nespresso line are proprietary, so there is not the competition like there is with the ESE pods used by other machines.A quick perusal tells me that the capsules are over $0.60 each, in bulk, while ESE pods can be found for closer to $0.40 online. The lack of frother and the proprietary capsules needed have me taking away 1-star.

Finally, this espresso machine is beautiful, elegant, very quick (you can crank out multiple espressos for a gathering quickly), produces excellent crema, has a small footprint, and is extremely easy to use.You pay a price for all of this and will continue to do so with the proprietary capsules.Again, the PC vs. Mac analogy is a good one.

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker Review

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerI love this waffle maker! It's like the ones our mom used, not those cheesy seeming plastic things they're making now. It's also got a lot of excellent features that make my life easier.
I'll mention right now that this is a VERY hot waffle maker. They make the plastic ones to be "cool touch".I'll trade the cool touch feature for the sturdier design of this versatile machine. I'm being careful and haven't burned myself yet. But it's something to consider if you'd like your children making waffles. My ten year old could be careful enough, but I keep my five and eight year olds away.
The waffles this machine makes are great! They freeze well too.The family is very happy. When the light goes of the unit is ready to make waffles. Pour in the batter and the light comes on again--wait for it to go off and the waffle is done (however, I usually go on instinct and sometimes pull out the waffle before the light goes off.)
The open grill feature makes wonderful pancakes and fried eggs.I have a big family and it's nice to have two pancakes cook at a shot without taking up all my stovetop!I can have bacon and eggs on the stove and the pancakes on the waffle maker.(I can also have a heart attack if I keep eating all these bacon and eggs!)
The sandwich feature is nice.I can cook two grilled cheese sandwiches at one time getting me out of the kitchen quicker. Some advice--cheese might drip out the side of the sandwich.Just keep the sandwich away from the back of the unit where the cables run in and the mess just wipes off--no problem. The sandwiches cook far more uniformly than they do in a pan on the stove. They taste great.
This unit cleans up easily and changing the grills from waffle to flat is easy.I recommend it over a lot of more costly models if you want more value for your money. This is the most versatile waffle maker I've found and all the features actually work!

Bialetti Cappuccino and Latte Set Review

Bialetti Cappuccino and Latte SetI could not resist trying this method of making espresso. You know you can spend alot trying to get a decent product and I have not been disappointed with the practically inexpensive Bialetti. The first attempt was successful and that told me this was for me....the bonus milk frother made more froth that an old steamer frother I used to have. There are a few tricks with the frother(1% milk by itself not so good but add some half and half to the milk and voile').The milk mixture needs to be heated enough to coat the back of a spoon, pump it quickly and serve.Regarding the espresso maker itself....just don't add any more water than to that line..and oh don't open the lid to look at it until it is done or you will get sputter onto your stove top.To know when the espresso is done just listen you will know when it is done....very quick and yummm.

Countertop Portable Ice Maker - EdgeStar Review

Countertop Portable Ice Maker - EdgeStarI've never written a review before after being a satisfied Amazon customer since it's inception. But the one negative review is way of mark and I had to respond in defense of this product.I have never had a single mechanical problem in three years of constant use.Because I am limited with my walking, I always havethe machine close at hand by my side. The ice does gradually melt over time in the basket, but the water is recycled into more ice as the compressor switches on and off as needed. Most people may use this only occasionally ona boat or a wet bar, but I use it for soft drinks when in the entertainment room in my basement.Because I am disabled, I do not have to climb the stairs every time I'd like a cold drink.I have a small fridge in the immediate area as well, but ice trays arefor the birds. The unit converts water to ice within about 15 minutes, enough for a 64 oz. bottle of soda. For the money I highly recommend it.

Dippin' Dots Frozen Dot Maker + Bonus Set Review

Dippin' Dots Frozen Dot Maker + Bonus SetThis is nothing but a mold that makes your 'frozen treats' into tiny balls. The mix that comes with it is really bad. It's nothing even close to the real Dippin' Dots. You can buy popsicle makers at Walmart for $2 that do the same thing, just a different shape. I had to have this when it came out because of all the money I was spending at the mall. I do not recommend this piece of junk unless it sells for $4.99 or less.

Hamilton Beach 54615 Wavestation Express Dispensing Blender with 48-Ounce Jar, Black Review

Hamilton Beach 54615 Wavestation Express Dispensing Blender with 48-Ounce Jar, BlackI purchased this blender about a year ago from Wal-Mart. I've had a number of blenders over the past 30+ years but always ended up giving them away because I seldom if ever used them -- too much bother -- and have this thing about getting rid of unused stuff but finding yet another excuse why I "need" to buy another blender. I got it strictly for smoothies. My sister convinced me they were good for me, but I wasn't about to pay $3-4 a pop for one smoothie.I was going to do all the research but saw this blender in Wal-Mart and just liked how it looked and really liked the price, around $18 at the time.I thought the spout thingee was neat, but I was really blown away by the 500 watts on this thing.I figured how bad could it be with 500 watts. If it blew out after recouping the price of 4-5 smoothies, it would be a fair tradeoff in my view. I'm not a technical person but after comparing the wattage of this one with the others on display, I thought what have I got to lose?

It's plastic, very lightweight and easy to move around. That works for me.Soooo easy to clean and disassemble when doing a thorough clean. Immediately after use I rinse it, fill it less than half full with hot water and a drop of liquid detergent, hold the lid down and give it a couple of whirls on pulse.Take it off and shake it around to get the top clean, then rinse again and make sure I open the spout to let it drain. If you don't clean it right away, you'll have to scrub it clean. You can disengage the spout, replacing it with the screw cap at the bottom of base, if you don't want to use the spout. My smoothies are so thick now I just pour it out.

The first few times I used it, I smelled burning rubber but I do push this thing as far as filling it with ice and whatever else I want and doing it as quickly as I can, using the setting that gives me the quickest results, be that pulse or smoothie or whatever.Again, Ilike this blender so much I figure I'll replace it with the same if I blow it and it's not under warranty. So far, so good. (It's a 3-year warranty.)

No more burning rubber even though I still fill it with ice and a mixture of everything.I'm reading "Green for Life" so I've added greens, celery, carrots and other vegetables, chia seed gel, flax seed, a little honey, etc., to my juice and fruit mixtures, both frozen banana and other fresh and frozen fruit, all of these things at the same time. DELICIOUS! My husband didn't like the vegetables added at first but now he really looks forward to them, which is just about every day or every other day now.The blender works like a charm. It doesn't pulverize the greens (spinach or romaine lettuce)100%.There's a small amount of greens that doesn't get chopped up - but very minute bits that aren't that noticeable and not worth the price for a higher-priced, "better" blender, as none of them get 5-star reviews anyway and mine works well enough to suit my needs. No problem whatsoever with ice. It has only bogged down on me once, but I just turned it off and nudged it around with wooden spoon and it's been good to go. Now, if I can remember, I put the ice cubes in after the juice, which is first.Sometimes I put them in last.

I'm not that easy to please, but I'm very satisfied with this blender. It's still a pleasure to use. I'm sending one to my son for his bday.
